About Us

Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ) is a group of workplace health and safety associations in Aotearoa.

Collaborating for healthy and safe work for everyone in Aotearoa.

We are:

  • an association of associations
  • a truly representative body for workplace health and safety professions in New Zealand
  • a trusted voice for health and safety professionals
  • a first point of contact for business leaders and government on workplace health and safety matters
  • an expert advisory group to guide effective health and safety policy.

Establishing a representative body for health and safety professionals was a commitment in the Government’s Working Safer package of reforms (2013) developed in response to the findings of the Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety (2012).

A step change in workplace health and safety performance in New Zealand requires us to work collaboratively to help drive effective solutions.

HASANZ promotes excellence in workplace health and safety practices.

HASANZ’s Strategic Objectives

Workforce Development (Capacity and Capability): Promote all health and safety disciplines and work with our Member Associations to support the needed increase in capacity and capability. We achieve this by establishing needs, developing capacity, scholarships, internships, mentoring and secondments, and through the HASANZ Register.

Enabling Members through Collaboration: Member Associations are enabled to be collectively impactful in leading workplace harm reduction. We achieve this by enabling collaboration, supporting our Member Associations, and connecting and leveraging relationships.

Engaging with the Business Community: The business community are connected to the health and safety disciplines through HASANZ. PCBUs understand the value of growing health and safety capability. We achieve this by connecting with SMEs, businesses, and the industry.

Leadership and Advocacy: Influences and guides in Aotearoa in workplace health and safety including the legal, legislative and regulatory processes and systems. We achieve this through advocating for policy change, legislation and regulation, government departments, and workers representation.

Awareness and Understanding: HASANZ and the health and safety disciplines are known and respected. The needs of HASANZ Member Associations and HASANZ stakeholders are understood and addressed. We achieve this by raising our profile and external communications, strengthening relationships with stakeholders, using our website as a key portal of information, and executing events.

A priority is improving access to quality advice for businesses by creating an online register of competent health and safety professionals. Lifting the professional standard of workplace health and safety practitioners means better guidance and support for employers and their workers.

Increased professionalism means increased confidence in health and safety advice and services.
